Peniston Perspectives - July 2010
Written by House District 35 – Representative Cherylin Peniston
This week the results of a really important survey were released. Each year CNBC ranks all 50 states on which are the best states in which to do business. This year's survey produced some very gratifying results for your Democratic legislative officials. In tandem with the Governor (also a Democrat), we are entrusted to balance the budget without hurting our economy. Our opponents would have people believe that, under the Democratic leadership of both the House and Senate and the Governor, we have hurt businesses in the State of Colorado so much that no business wants to stay here and no new businesses want to move here.

Jane Jefferson Democratic Club - July 20, 2010 Minutes
Written by LaVerna MacManus, Secretary
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the Janes' pledge were given. A card was read from Lily Ewing. The treasurer's report and a report from the dinner was given by Lucille Vela. The anniversary dinner was a huge success. We appreciate Annabelle Vigil's hard work in putting this dinner together. Carol Peterson voiced appreciation for Cherylin's help. We were pleased with the turnout of officers. It was a consensus of opinion that we honor the last of our original Janes, Edna Green. It was recommended that we try to honor her and all the Janes that have passed away, at the chili cookoff.

From the ACDP Chair - June 2010

As you probably know by now, I like to relate history to present day, and I have never read a Texas text book. I am a firm believer that we are doomed to live history over if we don't remember it. For you younger readers, you may want to google this song. I took some liberties with Tennessee Ernie Ford's song "16 Tons." Tennessee Ernie Ford recorded this song in 1955 and it reached number one on the billboard charts. It is more relevant now than ever. It is a musical story of life as a coal miner. The chorus of "Sixteen Tons" is:

You load sixteen tons, what do you get?
Another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don't you call me, 'cause I can't go;
I owe my soul to the Company Store.

The line "I owe my soul to the company store" refers to debt bondage. This is where workers were paid in script (like a company gift card), and not cash, which were redeemable only at the company store. They were kept under a system where they were enslaved to a company because of debt.
