Written by Marty Wisniewski
We have lost some meaning to words. The word "conservative," according to Columbia Encyclopedia is defined as "a political and social philosophy that promotes the maintenance of traditional institutions and opposes rapid change in society." Some conservatives seek to preserve things as they are, emphasizing stability and continuity, while others oppose modernism and seek a return to "the way things were."

Since the Presidency of Ronald Reagan, conservatism was altered to be interchangeable with corporatism and deregulation. I submit that all Republican Presidents from Reagan on were corporatists, not conservatives. The popular belief is that Republican Presidents reduced the size of government and federal spending. This assumption could not be further from the truth. The size of government and federal spending has increased. Corporate profits increase and their tax responsibility has decreased. The Reagan administration removed several tax deductions which affected the middle class more than anywhere else. The deregulations on corporations spread short-term profit opportunism to a very small, but rich population. It brought on the search for cheap labor, sending jobs overseas and instituting corporate insanity. Having US criticizes losing jobs but needing the American people to consume their goods, "corporate insanity."

The point of this is that changing back to what we had is not an option.

We have to keep making changes or are destined to relive history. Our "fast food" society wants an instant fix. Twelve years of corporatism can not be instantly fixed. This is not a time to change course, but to be re-energizing our base. We can not lose our focus and resolve. What was true two years ago is still true today. Our plight is a direct result of deregulation, corporate greed and polices from the last 8 years and beyond.

We need to support our Democratic Candidates. Yes, times are hard. It is easy to govern when times are easy. It is quite another story when times are hard. The alternative is what we had before. Scary, isn't it?
