State Senate District 24 - Lois Tochtrop

Lois and Paul Tochtrop have been married for forty-eight years. They are the parents of three sons and have six grandchildren so far, one dog, a cat and two horses.

Lois is a Registered Nurse who holds a BS in Nursing and Healthcare Management. She has served as a caregiver in both hospitals and nursing homes. Prior to her first election to the state legislature, she served as Director of Nursing at a long-term care facility specializing in the care of clients with behavioral problems. She now serves as a long-term care nursing consultant during the legislative interim.

Lois was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives from House District 34 in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004. A vacancy committee appointed her to the State Senate in December 2004. In the general election of November of 2006, voters elected her to a four-year term in the Colorado Senate.

This year her peers elected Lois Assistant Majority Leader of the Senate. Additionally, she serves on the following Senate committees: Transportation; Business, Labor and Technology; Audit; and Legislative Council. She also chairs the Sportsmen’s Caucus.

Lois continues to work diligently to find a means of providing affordable, quality, accessible health care for the 750,000 Colorado residents who have no health insurance and have limited access to health care.

In 2007 the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association recognized her for her tireless work on behalf of Colorado consumers. After three years of hard work, she passed legislation that will prohibit Colorado cities from abusing their power of eminent domain.

In addition to health care and consumer issues, Lois’ legislative agenda focuses on quality public education; good jobs that pay a living wage for Colorado’s working men and women; and a quality environment for all Colorado residents.
